Loosely translated, kanisa ndugu means "sister church" in Swahili. IAFR is facilitating kanisa ndugu relationships between refugee churches and the church at large.

The isolation of people and churches confined to refugee camps can only be broken if we take the initiative to pursue relationships with them.

But make no mistake, these relationships are not only for the encouragement of our refugee brothers and sisters. They have much to offer us as well. We need one another. IAFR is working to make kanisa ndugu relationships possible.

What does a kanisa nudgu relationship look like?

The foundation of the relationship revolves around an annual visit from the non-displaced church to her kanisa ndugu in the refugee camp. The churches worship together. They share stories and learn from one another. The hosting refugee church offers a firsthand look at the realities of refugee life and the various ministries of their church. They share needs and challenges related to their ministry projects. Visiting churches join with their kanisa ndugu in praying for God's provision. Sometimes they have the privilege of being a channel of God's provision for specific projects and needs.

Kanisa ndugu pray for one another and keep in touch with one between annual visits. It is not uncommon for refugee churches to fast and pray for their kanisa ndugu.

Indeed, beautiful transformation happens when churches walk together as kanisa ndugu.
