Where: Kakuma Refugee Camp
What: IAFR is committed to a long-term partnership with the United Refugee Churches (URC) in Kakuma refugee camp. The URC is an international and non-denominational refugee led association of over 40 churches in the camp. Their ministries include caring for the most vulnerable people in Kakuma, church planting and a 3 year leadership training school.
IAFR has assisted the URC with leadership training. IAFR's Bibles for Refugees project was born out of this partnership. We are presently developing a collaborative project to assist the URC with building materials needed for church related structures.
Context: Located in the extreme northwest of Kenya, Kakuma refugee camp was established in the early 1990s in response to wars and violence in the region. The refugee camp population is presently estimated to be more than 90,000 men, women and children - most of whom originated from Somalia, Ethiopia, D.R. Congo, Sudan, Eritrea, Uganda, Burundi, and Rwanda. Many refugee churches are active within the camp.
